R+M+S: Pasadena Residence

A modest three bedroom house was proposed for an empty site within an existing, older neighborhood in Pasadena. Located at the crown of a ridge, the site has long views from either end. At the same time, a public sidewalk along the length of one side, and an imposing neighboring house at the other were deemed invasive. The strategy for the house was to cover the greatest buildable area of the site, and then to subtract outdoor space in the form of private courtyards to punctuate the block. The sides are relatively solid, while the ends and the spaces adjacent to the courtyards are transparent, allowing for privacy and open living in the same instant.
